Treatment methods
Whatever method we use, a good working relationship is paramount. For therapy to be of use to you, it is important that you feel safe enough to open up, feel understood (well enough) by me and trust that our collaboration will help you further along. I like to integrate elements from different methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), schema-focused therapy (SFT), affect phobia therapy AFT), insight therapy, mindfulness, sensorimotor therapy and EMDR.
Outside of my field

Unfortunately, I cannot offer help with complaints that are severe, complex or have been present for many years. In these cases, it is better to opt for a longer-term therapy, possibly with a practice or agency that works with multidisciplinary teams. Examples of problems in which it is better to seek such care are: suicidality, self-harm, depression or anxiety that has been present for years, eating problems, personality problems, psychosis, severe compulsions or chronic trauma.

In some situations it may better to first seek help from a specialized practitioner, agency or institution before starting individual therapy. Examples of such situations are: domestic violence, high debts, housing problems, an ongoing lawsuit, medical issues, parenting problems or relationship problems. Your doctor or POH-GGZ can assist you in getting appropriate help.

Especially in case of excessive alcohol or drug use, gaming, gambling or other addictions, it is important to deal with these first (or simultaneously with other complaints or disorders) with a specialised therapist. Take a look here or here to see if these addiction treatment centers would advise you to seek help.

If you are not sure whether you have come to the right place, please contact me and we will take a look at it together.

In person and/or online

I offer in-person as well as online therapy: talk therapy via video calling. In case of online therapy, you will be receiving a complete, full-fledged therapy, just as you would in a physical practice space. It is also possible to do some sessions online and some in person.

What do you need for online sessions?

  • A device for making video calls (a smartphone, tablet, but if possible a laptop or computer with a camera and microphone). I think it is important to be able to see each other during the conversations, so no sessions via telephone only or text chat.

  • A good internet connection.

  • The video calls will take place via a secure platform, Embloom. This way your privacy is protected. It works best on the Google Chrome browser; this is a free and easy to install browser. I will e-mail a link before each appointment to start the call.

  • If you will be calling on your phone or tablet, you have the option of using the free Embloom Meet app - but it also works without the app. I can help you with installing the app if necessary.

  • A space where you can be alone and will not be disturbed.

  • I would advise you to take some time before and after the session, so you can prepare yourself a bit beforehand and let things sink in afterwards. Just as you would for in-person sessions.
